According to the Universal Declaration of Human rights all children are entitled to right to education. Malawi is a signatory of these instruments. In the quest of meeting the MDGs which the country is a signatory of, Primary education in Malawi is free. However the situation on the ground is different. Many children are out of school due to the poor infrastructures in schools.

Like many other schools in Malawi, Namadzi Primary School in Zomba has a population of 1600 children. The school has no desks, children sit on the ground in highly populated classes.

The government primary schools also impose different kind of fees or charges such as school fund, water fund, book fees and other charges. These fees and charges hinder the OVCs from accessing the education. NOVOC has been carrying out a project on increased access to education for the OVCs in Malawi. They have been lobbying the policy makers on waiver of user fees to the OVCs. However much as this is being implemented, NOVOC has realized that conducive learning environment needs to be provided for all children to enjoy their right to education.

NOVOC is embarking on activities that are geared towards empowering the communities to have increased access of financial support hence supporting the Orphans and vulnerable children.

NOVOC is also exploring on how to lobby the private sector to give back to the community by building schools or providing desks. With financial support from willing donors they will be implementing an advocacy project targeting the private sector in all the districts.

NOVOC is also aiming on increasing its advocacy initiatives to influence the Government to allocate funds for education support in its budget.
